Luggage

Send the suitcase. Travel with a day bag.

There is no Indian version of a station cloak room to hotel courier: a bag that travels without you travels as a parcel, or with a luggage specialist. The good news is that both exist at scale, from the post office counter to a door to door baggage service that collects from your home in Delhi. This page explains the real options, and how to ship a bag home when the trip ends.

How door to door sending works here

The pattern is the same whichever carrier you use: you book, pack the bag securely, and either hand it over at a counter or a kiosk or have it collected from your door, and it travels under a booking you can track while you travel light. What India does not have is a railway product that moves a bag from a station cloak room to your hotel: the cloak room holds the bag where you left it, and sending it onward means one of the carriers below. Keep documents, medicines and one night's essentials with you, and give the carrier a delivery address that can actually receive the bag when it arrives.

DTDC: the courier network

DTDC is the default private courier for a bag crossing India. For personal shipments it offers a dedicated online courier solution, with a home pickup you book yourself and real time tracking every step of the way. Its Express Parcel service is fast door to door parcel delivery with real time tracking, and Express Premium adds priority handling and guaranteed timelines for the bag that has to be somewhere by a date. The network behind it covers more than 15,300 pincodes and reaches 96 per cent of India's population, and its international shipping connects more than 220 destinations globally, so the same habit works for a bag going home overseas. A suitcase simply travels as a parcel.

India Post: the counter in every town

India Post is the universal fallback, and for a heavy bag it is often the honest one. Its Express Parcel is an air express parcel product providing time bound delivery, transmitted through air or any other fastest means available: it can be booked at any post office in the country, from a minimum chargeable weight of 0.5 kg, a retail customer can book up to 20 kg over the counter, and all Express Parcel consignments are given door delivery irrespective of weight. Pick up from your premises is the business customers' facility, so a traveller hands the bag in at the counter; the network waiting at the other end is the widest in the country. India Post's Speed Post is the sister express service, providing time bound delivery of letters and parcels weighing up to 35 kg between specified stations in India.

Avaan Excess: the luggage specialist

Avaan Excess is built for exactly this job, a door to door luggage delivery service. You enter your bag details and get an instant price, then choose doorstep pickup or airport drop off: at its airport kiosks the team takes care of the weighing, packing and tagging, and Delhi is one of its kiosk cities, alongside Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Goa. Domestic shipping rates start at ₹89 per kg, every shipment is fully insured from pickup to delivery, and you track it digitally the whole way, with the estimated delivery timeline for your route shown before you confirm the booking. It takes suitcases, travel bags, backpacks, cartons, personal belongings and household items, delivers across India, and ships baggage from India to more than 190 countries worldwide.

CarterX: doorstep to airport in Delhi

For the airport leg itself, CarterX specialises in carrying bags between your door and the terminal, offered with airline partners such as Akasa Air. In Delhi and the NCR, and also in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, its Doorstep Baggage Assistance picks your bags up from your doorstep and delivers them directly to the airport terminal, and on arrival it runs the other way, from the baggage belts to doorstep delivery. Its Rush Surface service moves bags by road between a residence and a departure or arrival terminal across India, and Rush AirExpress does the same by air cargo: the closest thing India has to sending a bag ahead to meet your flight.

Shipping a bag home

When the trip ends and the suitcase is full of shopping, the same thinking works internationally. Send My Bag ships suitcases, boxes and sports equipment door to door across more than 80 countries, collected from your home, hotel, university or workplace and tracked from collection to delivery, with an instant quote and your choice of collection date booked online, and guidance on international customs requirements, so the flight home can be taken with hand luggage only. Full disclosure: we have applied to join Send My Bag's affiliate programme, and while that application is pending this is a plain link and we earn nothing from it.
