Where to stay

Stay where the event is.

The stay shapes the trip, and in India the event decides the base: the NCPA and the south Mumbai halls point to Fort and Nariman Point, the Delhi expo halls to Pragati Maidan, the Bengaluru stadium shows to the north of that city, and a Goa festival to Panaji or the beach belt. Decide which event you are building around before you look at hotels, and book early for the festival stack and the big concert weekends, when the whole country travels.

How booking around events works here

India's big travel windows are predictable: Dussehra and Diwali, the December concert and wedding season, and the January festival run fill their cities weeks out, while the monsoon weeks are when the same hotels discount. Each venue on this calendar pulls the sensible base towards a different district, and the ride home is the fact that matters, because concerts here end late and the metro cities are vast.

Stay near a metro or suburban rail station and the city's distances shrink. The choice is between the event district itself, with everything on foot, and a quieter base that costs you a ride each way. Decide by the evenings: festivals and concerts are night events, and the best base is the one you can ride home to after the encore.
