Luggage

Put the bag down. Enjoy the event.

A suitcase is dead weight at a festival, a match or a gig. Delhi gives you four good ways to be rid of it: the railway cloak rooms at the big stations, the digital lockers in the Metro, the left luggage counter at the airport, and booked storage in a shop near the venue through Bounce. This page sets out how each one works and what it costs.

Four ways to store a bag

Delhi's storage landscape is built around its transport system rather than the rows of coin lockers you find in Japanese stations. The railway cloak rooms are the old, staffed option and can hold a bag for days. The Metro lockers are small, digital and priced by the hour. The airport's left luggage is the long layover answer, open around the clock at Terminal 3. And booked shop storage through Bounce fills the gaps near venues that none of the other three reaches. Pick by how long the bag needs to sit and how big it is.

At the railway stations: cloak rooms and new digital lockers

Indian Railways lists cloak rooms and lockers among its passenger amenities at selected stations, and Delhi's big stations are where travellers in this city use them. The rules are the railway's own: luggage is deposited duly locked, because baggage that is not locked securely may not be accepted by railway staff at all; a receipt is given to you when you deposit it; and you take delivery by surrendering that receipt and paying the prescribed charges, with no delivery made without the receipt. Storage can run for up to one month, and the charges are prescribed per 24 hours or part of one, so the counter's own rate board is the final word on price.

New Delhi station also has the newer self-operated option. Northern Railway has introduced OTP based digital lockers at Delhi's major stations, operational at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin, with Delhi Junction and Anand Vihar Terminal to follow. At New Delhi the lockers stand in the Main Hall near Platform 16, below the digital display board, and the facility is available 24 hours a day. You enter your mobile number on the panel by the lockers and verify it with the one time code sent to it, choose a locker size and a duration, pay digitally, and place the bag inside; to collect it, you verify the same number again and choose the Release option. Northern Railway built the service for passengers with long waiting periods and for tourists heading out of the station between trains.

In the Metro: digital lockers by the hour

Delhi Metro's lockers are a different tool, built for a few hours rather than a few days. Through the DMRC Momentum 2.0 app, commuters can rent a digital locker at 50 stations on Lines 1 to 7 and the Airport Line, among them Rajiv Chowk, Anand Vihar, Noida City Centre, IP Extension and Supreme Court. A locker is rented for between one and six hours, in three sizes, at ₹20 per hour for a small locker, ₹30 for a medium and ₹40 for a large, and a penal amount is charged if you run past the period you rented. There is no physical lock or key; the app runs the locker. These are parcel sized boxes, installed in a grid of 83 to 90 at a station, and DMRC offers them as personal temporary storage as well as for deliveries: the right scale for a handbag, a camera bag or a small backpack, while a full suitcase belongs in a cloak room instead.

At the airport: left luggage at Terminal 3

Delhi Airport's left luggage facility is located at the Airport Connect Building, the metro station building in Terminal 3, and this 24/7 facility serves domestic and international passengers alike, for a few hours or up to a maximum of 30 days, after presenting their boarding pass and a valid photo ID. The airport's published rate card charges by size: a small bag, less than 7 kg, costs ₹80 per bag for the first two hours, ₹20 per bag for every subsequent hour up to eight hours, or a flat ₹200 per bag per 24 hours; a medium bag, 7.1 to 20 kg, costs ₹120 for the first two hours, ₹30 an hour after that, or ₹400 flat per 24 hours, and heavier bags sit in the highest band of the same card. For a long layover, or a last day in the city after an airport hotel checkout, this is the simplest pair of hands at the airport itself.

Bounce: booked storage in shops across the city

Bounce is the app based option: local shops and hotels take your bag behind the counter, you book and pay in advance through its app or website, and the exact address is confirmed when you book. Bounce puts no size limit on what you can store, bookings can be cancelled free of charge, and every booking carries $10,000 of protection for your belongings. Its New Delhi city page did not publish a starting price when we fetched it for this page, so the price shown for your spot and your day is the price that counts. It is the flexible choice when the event is nowhere near a station or the airport.
